Senior Tax Planning Manager

A large, established organization is seeking a Senior Manager, Federal Tax Controversy to join its corporate tax team. This role will take ownership of federal tax examinations and controversy matters, partnering closely with internal stakeholders and external advisors to manage audit activity, evaluate tax positions, and reduce future tax risk.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead federal tax examinations and serve as a primary contact for tax authorities and external advisors.
• Manage responses to audit requests, including IDRs, notices, supporting documentation, and technical analysis.
• Research and document complex federal tax positions and prepare technical memoranda.
• Support the evaluation of uncertain tax positions and related ASC 740 matters.
• Identify opportunities to strengthen tax controls, processes, and audit readiness.
• Partner with Accounting, Finance, and other business teams on tax planning and compliance matters.
• Monitor relevant legislative and regulatory developments and communicate potential business impacts.
• Utilize tax technology, automation, and data analytics to improve research and reporting processes.
• Support and mentor other members of the tax team.

What We're Looking For

• 6+ years of progressive corporate tax experience, with strong exposure to federal tax controversy and examinations.
• Experience gained within a large corporate tax environment and/or public accounting.
• Strong knowledge of U.S. federal corporate taxation and ASC 740.
• Experience researching and defending complex tax positions.
• Advanced Excel and strong tax technology/data skills.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills, particularly when explaining complex tax matters to senior stakeholders.
• MST, JD, LL.M. in Taxation, or similar advanced tax/legal education preferred.
• CPA or active bar membership is a plus.
