We are seeking a highly experienced Lead Fabricator to lead day-to-day fabrication operations while actively working alongside the fabrication team. This is a hands-on leadership position responsible for maintaining production flow, coordinating fabrication work, training team members, and ensuring finished work meets quality, safety, and schedule requirements.
The ideal candidate has extensive experience in welding, metal fabrication, forming, cutting, CNC equipment, and blueprint/print reading. This individual must be able to work independently, recognize production priorities, solve problems on the floor, and provide direction to other fabricators. The ideal candidate also considers themself to be a career fabricator and working leader who takes pride in their craftsmanship, understands how to get work done efficiently, and is willing to get on the equipment and do the work-not simply supervise it. They are dedicated, dependable, detail-oriented, safety-conscious, and capable of keeping a busy fabrication department organized and productive.
Leadership Expectations
This position is intended for an experienced fabricator who can lead by example. The Lead Fabricator is expected to spend significant time performing hands-on fabrication work while directing the team, assigning priorities, training employees, resolving production issues, and ensuring work is completed correctly and on schedule.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and work alongside fabrication personnel in daily production activities.
- Prioritize and coordinate fabrication work to keep production moving efficiently.
- Read and interpret engineering drawings, fabrication prints, dimensions, weld symbols, and specifications.
- Perform and oversee MIG and TIG welding of carbon steel, stainless steel, and other metals as required.
- Operate and coordinate work using:
- Plasma cutting equipment
- Water jet cutting
- Press brake
- Shear
- Metal saws
- Light CNC equipment
- Welding and fabrication equipment
- Coordinate requests for plasma cutting, water jet work, forming, shearing, sawing, welding, and other fabrication processes.
- Determine the appropriate fabrication process and sequence for individual jobs.
- Handle and stage raw materials while maintaining an organized and efficient work area.
- Train and mentor fabrication personnel on equipment, processes, print reading, welding techniques, quality standards, and safe work practices.
- Monitor work in progress and make adjustments to prevent delays and bottlenecks.
Inspect completed work for dimensional accuracy, fit, finish, and overall quality. - Identify fabrication issues and develop practical solutions to keep projects on schedule.
Communicate production priorities and material requirements to management and other departments. - Ensure proper use and care of fabrication equipment and tooling.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe fabrication environment.
- Support continuous improvement efforts to improve quality, efficiency, and production throughput.
- Serve as the primary working lead and point of contact for fabrication activities.
Required Qualifications
- Extensive hands-on experience in metal fabrication and welding.
- Strong MIG and TIG welding experience.
- Experience with plasma cutting, water jet cutting, press brakes, shears, and metal saws.
- Experience with light CNC operation and/or CNC fabrication equipment.
- Strong ability to read and interpret fabrication drawings and engineering prints.
- Strong understanding of metal forming, cutting, fit-up, welding, and fabrication processes.
- Ability to accurately measure and work to tight tolerances.
- Demonstrated ability to train and develop less-experienced fabricators.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Ability to prioritize multiple fabrication requests and maintain production flow.
- Ability to work independently and make sound decisions on the production floor.
- Strong communication and leadership skills.
