PRN Phlebotomist - Outpatient Clinic

Position Type: PRN / As Needed
Typical Coverage Hours: Monday-Friday, 9:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m., based on clinic needs and staff coverage

Position Summary

We are seeking a dependable, patient-focused PRN Phlebotomist to provide coverage in a fast-paced outpatient clinic. Proficiency in oral glucose tolerance testing (OGTT), including timed blood draws and accurate specimen handling, is required. The ideal candidate is also confident performing venipuncture and capillary collections, follows established safety procedures, and delivers professional, compassionate service to every patient. This as-needed role is well suited for an experienced phlebotomist who is flexible, accurate, and able to work independently while supporting the clinical team.

Key Responsibilities

Perform venipuncture and capillary blood collection using approved techniques.

Required: Perform oral glucose tolerance testing (OGTT), including administering the glucose drink according to clinic protocol, completing all timed blood draws, documenting collection times accurately, and properly labeling and handling specimens.

Verify patient identity and test orders before each collection.

Label, process, document, store, and prepare specimens for transport accurately and promptly.

Explain procedures clearly and help patients remain comfortable throughout the collection process.

Follow infection-control, bloodborne-pathogen, sharps-disposal, and workplace safety requirements.

Recognize and respond appropriately to difficult draws, fainting, and other collection-related concerns.

Maintain complete and accurate patient and specimen information in the clinic's electronic systems.

Keep the phlebotomy area clean, organized, and adequately stocked.

Communicate professionally with providers, laboratory personnel, patients, and clinic staff.

Assist with patient flow and other appropriate clinical support duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

High school diploma or GED.

Completion of an accredited phlebotomy training program.

Required: Demonstrated experience performing oral glucose tolerance testing (OGTT), including accurate timed specimen collections.

Minimum of 1-2 years of recent phlebotomy experience in a clinic, physician office, outpatient laboratory, or similar clinical setting.

Demonstrated proficiency in venipuncture and capillary collection.

Strong knowledge of patient identification, specimen labeling, handling, and transport procedures.

Ability to maintain patient confidentiality and comply with clinic policies.

Professional communication, organization, and customer-service skills.

Ability to work independently, manage multiple priorities, and maintain accuracy in a busy environment.

Preferred Qualifications

Current national phlebotomy certification from a recognized credentialing organization.

Current Basic Life Support certification.

OB/GYN clinic experience is a plus.

Experience collecting specimens from a range of adult patients, including individuals with difficult venous access.

Experience with electronic health records or laboratory information systems.

Schedule and Availability

This is a PRN position with no guaranteed number of hours. Shifts will be offered based on patient volume, planned time off, and other clinic coverage needs. Candidates should be dependable, responsive, and available for weekday shifts, including occasional short-notice assignments.
