Environmental, Health Safety (EHS) Position
Heill Safety Solutions is seeking a qualified candidate to fill an EHS role in the South Bay area of San Francisco for our client, X. This role will serve as a direct point of contact for various user group EHS needs and concerns within a wide variety of operations.

Partnering with the various project teams and at the direction and guidance
of the X EHS Manager, this position will provide direct support in the form of risk assessment, EHS process design, possible exposure monitoring, training, and program development and implementation. This position develops and implements relevant EHS programs, delivers training, advises various stakeholder groups regarding EHS issues and considerations, and recommends appropriate actions and programs. Primary responsibility is to implement EHS programs specific to the client's scientific and administrative community.

Ideally this person will have:

Lab background, or experience in chemistry / material based EHS. Teams are wanting to run experiments with HF, hydrogen, molten glass, iron dust, and things of that nature.

We'd like someone on staff who can interface with those scientists, speak their language a bit better, and determine EHS controls and facility requirements.

Experience with Microfabrication and materials science is a plus

Biosafety experience

Responsibilities
This position will provide guidance in support of the EHS processes for user groups in our main and remote project locations. The SH&E Professional's primary focus is to proactively create safety programs and processes, provide EHS project management, enhance the safety culture, and to provide accident and incident response.
Responsibilities include:
Coordinate risk assessments to determine the level of risk exposure, confirm
controls in place, and develop solutions to reduce risk to acceptable levels expected of X environments.
Assess, brainstorm, problem-solve, develop and provide safety solutions with appropriate personnel to address and resolve safety issues as discovered or requested.
Review, evaluate, develop, write and deliver safety programs, procedures,
processes, accepted safe practices, activities, and complete documentation as
appropriate for the X environment.
Implement programs and policies for monitoring and preventing chemical, physical, ergonomic and biological hazards.
Discuss and trend performance, as needed and applicable with the X EHS Manager, to assist in the prioritization process to focus EHS efforts for maximum effectiveness and to transform data / insights into practical solutions for the management of the EHS process.
Develop specific reports that assist in identifying and resolving exposures that contribute to the reduction of occupational injury and illness exposures, liability and environmental and property damage expenses. Complete research to craft solutions to resolving safety, health and environmental challenges.
Conduct on-site safety evaluations, safety assessments, ergonomics assessments, and/or job safety analysis (JSA) of identified areas / projects to observe EHS process in practice, identify hazards and exposures, evaluate hazard controls and effectiveness, and best safe practice / EHS compliance issues.
Develop, coordinate and facilitate safety training on issues related to environmental, health and safety to enhance safety, skills, and ability.
Develop corrective action plans / matrices and work with appropriate personnel to resolve and track, as needed.
Establish, attend and lead, as needed, progress meetings with the X EHS Manager and key management personnel to discuss EHS progress, measures, and service delivery focus with appropriate oversight personnel.
Evaluate and compare X's safety and health operational exposures and practices with applicable laws and regulations to identify regulatory gaps, and partner to develop and delivery solutions.
Survey, compile, and analyze data relating to occupational and environmental health issues such as chemical exposure, radiation, smoke, fumes, noise, temperatures, dusts, vapors, mists, gases, solvents, lighting, and ergonomics which are known or suspected of being real or potential detriments to health.
Recommend control measures for exposure to hazardous materials or conditions.
Draw upon technical knowledge and learned industry best EHS practices to resolve safety and health related problems, including the correct use of protective clothing or accessories.
Keep abreast of and communicate with the on site X-EHS team and X EHS Manager of new developments in the industry and government regulations, and maintains working knowledge.
Analyze and provide advice regarding controls for conditions contributing to
occupational hazards and diseases.
Ensures safety efforts are developed as a system to increase efficiency, productivity and value to guide graduation within desired time frames.
Utilize monitoring instrumentation and equipment in the field, and laboratory verification of compliance with health regulations.
As needed, provide guidance and expertise to appropriate personnel (i.e.,
managers, team members, executives) for decision-making and ensuring safe
compliance with environmental protocols for air, water, soil, tanks, and waste
streams.
As needed, liaise with local, county, state and federal regulatory agencies to address and resolve relevant regulatory issues, as needed, and prepare relevant programs, documents, permits and hazardous materials / waste submittals.
Interface with individuals, in the workplace setting (office and industrial / laboratory oriented), to determine the issues that may lead to repetitive motion / cumulative trauma exposures and discomfort, and correct them.
As needed, conduct ergonomics evaluations by discussing work tasks, workflow, discomforts (if any), and identifying exposures observed, and work with individuals to promote neutral postures by making adjustments possible with current equipment, and making recommendations.
Essential Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities
BA/BS degree in safety or related field, and relevant previous experience (minimum 5 years) with demonstrated ability to perform independent work
Demonstrated ability to lead, negotiate, recommend and implement solutions for moderate to complex problems
Proficient verbal and written communication skills necessary to effectively collaborate in a team environment and to present and communicate technical information to all levels of management.
Demonstrated analytical and decision-making skills with the ability to organize and effectively coordinate multiple and frequently conflicting, concurrent tasks, with good follow-through.
Management multiple projects and coordinate resources with precision
Ability to mature safety program into a safety culture
Ability to work independently as well as in a team in a fast-paced environment. Can execute assigned tasks autonomously and provide strategic guidance on development and implementation of processes
Be part of the emergency response team (ERT) and able to provide 1st aid / CPR / AED in medical event situations
High level of proficiency with computers and standard office software
Understanding of common mechanical and electrical hazards; ability to comprehend those hazards during uncommon applications
Desired Qualifications
Certification by the Board of Certified Safety Professionals (CSP), or similar.
Experience with Google suite of tools (Chrome, Hangouts, Docs, Sheets, Slides, Gmail)
Previous relevant experience in an R&D environment that is fast paced
Demonstrated familiarity with Cal/OSHA, OSHA, NFPA, Ergonomics / Human Factors, Emergency Preparedness and Response, and regulatory programs, required regulatory and permitting paperwork Location, Travel, Schedule

Travel, as required but anticipate 8 to10%
Daily schedule is somewhat flexible, but anticipate 40 weekly hours
